TURBO-RAMJET ENGINESThe Lockheed SR-71"Blackbird" is a long-range, high-altitude,Mach3+strategicreconnaissance aircraftdeveloped and manufactured by the American aerospace companyLockheed Corporation. It is powered by two Pratt & Whitney J58(turbo-ramjet engines)with 25,000 lbf (110 kN) thrust each. The J-58 engine is of the WRAPAROUND Turbo-ramjet type. At subsonic speed, it operates as a turbojet engine, while at high supersonic speeds, it operates as a ramjet engine, and at low supersonic speed, it combines both turbojet and ramjet operations. The different cases are illustrated on the T-S diagram. A detailed analysis of this engine, as well as the second type of turbo-ramjet (Over/under type), is given in my book (Aircraft Propulsion and Gas Turbine Engines, 2nd edition, Taylor & Francis/CRC Press, 2017).The third edition will be available soon.

When the pressure is on, the aerospace industry turns to Kevlar®.Many aircraft contain bottles of pressurized oxygen and other gases. Choosing the right material for the casing of these bottles is critical. If a traditional alloy-encased bottle suffers catastrophic failure, metal fragments can be released at high velocity, threatening passengers and crew.Casings made with Kevlar® filament offer a more lightweight solution that also reduces risk — rupturing rather than disintegrating if ductile failure occurs, which does not result in fragmentation.Explore more Kevlar® aerospace applications: http://spr.ly/6041eO553#Aerospace #Aircraft #Kevlar #AerospaceApplications

Composites help needed! This is your chance to help shape future generations of compositeers by sharing some of your hard-earned lessons learned.I’m in the process of updating and expanding the chapter on “Aircraft Applications” for the ASM International Handbook 21, Composites. Here are platforms/technologies I am specifically targeting. If you worked on any of these, or know someone who worked on any of these, or if you have info about already published technical papers or articles in industry publications concerning any of these, please contact me via direct message or leave a comment below.* Boeing 787 AFP fuselage* Airbus Aircraft ATL A350 wing skin* Airbus VARTM A220 wing skin* Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider (long shot but I thought I’d check)* Boeing C-17* Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II (any version, any unique composite applications)* Boeing F/A-18E/F/G co-cured/co-bonded structure* Northrop Grumman Global Hawk bonded wing structure* Cirrus SR22 and/or SF50* Diamond Aircraft DA42 and/or DA50 RG* Epic Aircraft E1000 GX* Any other platforms/applications that you think should be featuredObviously not looking for anything proprietary or export controlled. This is a great way to get your company’s technology out there for everyone to see as well as passing on valuable lessons for the next generation of engineers who will be designing the next 50 years of composite aircraft structure.Dream big.Work hard.Help others. It’s the #LaminateLife way. And right now, LaminateLife is asking for your help. Inputs/suggestions needed prior to the end of this month.Thank you!!-Gary#composites #advancedmanufacturing #aerospace #flying

Great post from our social team on the primary event that launched the Fuel Tank Flammability Reduction Rule. This FAA-driven airworthiness directive is being adopted on late-life aircraft that are not currently equipped with an approved ignition mitigation means. To learn more about how you can ensure compliance download our white paper and get in touch with me.#FTFR #IgnitionMitigation #Jetaire

Why is the MiG-31 so fast? The wings and airframe of the MiG-31 are stronger than those of the MiG-25, permitting supersonic flight at low altitudes. Like the MiG-25, its flight surfaces are built primarily of nickel-steel alloy, enabling the aircraft to tolerate kinetic heating at airspeeds approaching Mach 3.

As a first-of-its-kind, fly-by-wire rigid airship, electronics are a significant piece of what separates Pathfinder 1 from airships of the past. To ensure reliability, Director of Electrical Engineering Hossein was testing functionality and repeatability on an early iteration of our power distribution unit (PDU). All systems undergo rigorous testing and validation by the team before making their way to integration on the ship.#ElectricalEngineering #LighterThanAir #Aviation #FlyByWire #Aerospace
